Castor Seed Oil

CASTOR OIL (RICINUS COMMUNIS SEED OIL)

Origin & Source

Castor Oil is extracted from the seeds of the castor plant (Ricinus communis), a hardy plant native to tropical regions of Africa and India and cultivated worldwide for thousands of years. Archaeological records show castor oil being used in ancient Egypt as a skin ointment, lamp fuel, and medicinal preparation. Today, cosmetic-grade castor oil is obtained through cold pressing and refining methods that remove naturally occurring toxins from the raw seed, resulting in a safe, stable, and skin-appropriate oil.

Biochemical Profile & Unique Composition

What makes Castor Oil chemically distinct is its exceptionally high content of ricinoleic acid, a hydroxylated fatty acid that accounts for up to 90% of the oil’s composition. This rare fatty acid gives castor oil its signature thickness, high polarity, and remarkable affinity for the skin. Ricinoleic acid contributes to castor oil’s humectant-like behavior, allowing it to help attract and retain moisture while also providing a soft occlusive effect.

Skin Function & Benefits

On the skin, Castor Oil delivers deep conditioning, softness, and protection against moisture loss. Its naturally viscous texture creates a cushioning, protective layer that helps smooth rough areas and improve comfort. Castor Oil is especially beneficial in areas prone to dryness or cracking, such as lips, cuticles, hands, and elbows. It also helps improve the adhesion of pigments and actives in cosmetic products, making it valuable in color cosmetics and treatment balms.

Formulation Role & Sensory Profile

In formulation, Castor Oil is prized for its density, slip, and glossy finish. It enhances the body and structure of balms, lip products, and cleansing oils, improving glide and preventing a dry or waxy feel. When blended with lighter oils, it balances absorption and contributes a refined, plush texture. Its stability and solvency also make it an effective carrier for oil-soluble ingredients and essential oil blends.

Typical Uses in Skincare

Castor Oil is commonly used in lip balms, cleansing balms, facial oils, hand and foot treatments, lash and brow serums, and intensive repair products. It is also widely used in soaps and ointments where long-lasting moisture and protection are desired.
