Hydroxypropyl β-Cyclodextrin

Hydroxypropyl β-Cyclodextrin

Origin & Source

Hydroxypropyl β-Cyclodextrin (HP-β-Cyclodextrin) is a highly refined, biotechnologically modified carbohydrate derived from natural starch sources—most commonly corn. The base molecule, β-cyclodextrin, is produced through enzymatic conversion of starch, creating a ring-shaped sugar structure. This structure is then hydroxypropylated to improve solubility, safety, and performance in cosmetic formulations.

Molecular Structure & Functional Science

Cyclodextrins have a unique toroidal (donut-like) molecular shape: the exterior is water-loving (hydrophilic), while the interior cavity is water-repelling (lipophilic). This allows Hydroxypropyl β-Cyclodextrin to encapsulate oil-soluble molecules—such as fragrance components, essential oils, or volatile actives—within its inner cavity while remaining fully water-dispersible. This encapsulation stabilizes delicate compounds, reduces volatility, and controls their release over time.

Skin Function & Benefits

On the skin, Hydroxypropyl β-Cyclodextrin contributes indirectly but meaningfully to comfort and performance. By encapsulating fragrance molecules and certain actives, it helps reduce irritation potential, soften scent perception, and prevent overwhelming aroma bursts. This creates a more refined, gentle sensory experience—particularly important for facial mists, sprays, and products intended for sensitive or frequent use.

Formulation Role & Performance Benefits

In formulation, HP-β-Cyclodextrin is valued for its ability to improve solubility, stability, and longevity of oil-based ingredients in water-based systems. It enhances clarity, prevents separation, reduces essential-oil spotting, and improves shelf stability. It also helps neutralize unwanted odors and allows formulators to lower overall fragrance load without sacrificing performance.

Typical Uses in Skincare & Body Care

Hydroxypropyl β-Cyclodextrin is commonly used in facial mists, body sprays, sleep sprays, toners, deodorants, and aromatherapy products. It is especially useful in water-based formulations that contain fragrance, essential oils, or volatile actives and require a clean, elegant finish.

Why Unicorn Tears Uses It

Unicorn Tears uses Hydroxypropyl β-Cyclodextrin to elevate sensorial refinement, stability, and skin comfort—particularly in sprays and water-light products. It allows fragrances and essential oils to feel softer, longer-lasting, and more harmonious with the skin. While technically not naturally derived, it is used intentionally and transparently for its unique ability to enhance performance without compromising the overall purity, elegance, or user experience of the formulation.
