MCT Oil

MCT OIL (CAPRILYC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE / FRACTIONATED COCONUT OIL)

Origin & Source

MCT Oil, commonly referred to in skincare as Fractionated Coconut Oil, is derived primarily from coconut oil through a process called fractionation. In this process, long-chain fatty acids are removed, leaving behind medium-chain triglycerides—mainly caprylic and capric acids. While coconut oil itself has ancient roots across tropical cultures, MCT oil is a modern refinement designed to deliver performance, purity, and stability. Cosmetic-grade MCT oil is odorless, colorless, and highly refined for consistency and safety.

Biochemical Profile & Structure

MCT Oil is composed almost entirely of medium-chain triglycerides, which are smaller and more chemically stable than long-chain fatty acids. This molecular structure allows it to spread easily and absorb rapidly without clogging pores or leaving residue. Unlike heavier oils, MCT oil does not contain proteins, vitamins, or reactive compounds, making it exceptionally inert and non-irritating. Its resistance to oxidation gives it a long shelf life and enhances the stability of finished formulations.

Skin Function & Benefits

On the skin, MCT Oil provides lightweight emollience and immediate softness without heaviness. It smooths the surface of the skin, reduces transepidermal water loss by creating a breathable barrier, and enhances the feel of hydration without contributing shine or greasiness. Because of its clean, non-comedogenic profile, it is well suited for sensitive, acne-prone, and combination skin types.

Formulation Role & Sensory Profile

In formulation, MCT Oil is highly valued for its versatility and sensorial refinement. It improves spreadability, reduces drag, and balances richer oils and butters in emulsions and balms. Its fast-absorbing nature creates a “dry-silk” finish that elevates the overall elegance of a formula. MCT oil is also an excellent carrier for essential oils, lipid-soluble actives, and fragrance, allowing for even dispersion and consistent performance.

Typical Uses in Skincare

MCT Oil is commonly used in facial oils, body oils, creams, lotions, cleansing balms, serums, sprays, and aromatherapy products. It is especially effective in products designed to feel lightweight, fast-absorbing, and residue-free, as well as in formulations requiring a stable carrier oil.
