Rosehip Oil

ROSEHIP OIL (ROSA CANINA / ROSA RUBIGINOSA SEED OIL)

Origin & Source

Rosehip Oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of wild rose bushes, most commonly Rosa canina or Rosa rubiginosa, native to the Andes Mountains of Chile and regions of Europe. For centuries, Indigenous communities in South America used rosehip oil as a skin remedy to heal dryness, scars, and sun damage caused by harsh mountain climates. The oil is extracted from the small seeds inside the rose fruit (the “hip”) using gentle cold-press methods to preserve its fragile, bioactive nutrients.

Biochemical Profile & Nutrient Density

Rosehip Oil is uniquely rich in linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3), essential fatty acids that play a critical role in maintaining a healthy skin barrier. What makes rosehip especially prized is its natural content of trans-retinoic-acid–like compounds (vitamin A derivatives), along with vitamin C precursors, vitamin E, carotenoids, and polyphenols. This rare combination supports skin renewal, brightness, and overall vitality.

Skin Function & Benefits

On the skin, Rosehip Oil helps support cellular turnover, improve the appearance of uneven tone, and promote a more radiant complexion. Its lightweight structure allows it to penetrate easily, delivering nourishment without clogging pores. Regular use helps soften the look of fine lines, smooth rough texture, and restore elasticity—making it particularly beneficial for mature, dry, or sun-exposed skin. Because of its balancing fatty acid profile, it is also suitable for combination and blemish-prone skin types.

Formulation Role & Sensory Profile

In formulation, Rosehip Oil provides a dry, fast-absorbing emollience with a subtle, natural slip. Its light texture helps counterbalance richer oils and butters, preventing formulas from feeling heavy. Rosehip Oil also contributes a soft golden hue and a refined, skin-loving feel that enhances the overall elegance of facial oils and emulsions. Because it is more delicate than many oils, it is often paired with more stable oils to enhance longevity.

Typical Uses in Skincare

Rosehip Oil is commonly used in facial oils, serums, creams, eye products, scar-care treatments, and brightening formulas. It is especially valued in products designed to support renewal, radiance, and visible skin refinement.
